Crafting System — Upgrading and Modifying Gear
High threatUpdated 2026-06-03
Crafting in No Rest for the Wicked revolves around three core mechanics: upgrading gear at workbenches, applying rune modifiers, and salvaging unwanted items for materials. Each system feeds into the others, creating a loop of exploration, combat, and refinement.
Workbench upgrades
Workbenches are scattered throughout Sacrament, with the main hub in the town of Nameless Pass. Upgrading a weapon increases its base damage, while upgrading armor improves its defense and poise resistance. Each upgrade tier requires rarer materials found in later regions.
- Tier 1: Scrap Metal, Linen Cloth — available in opening areas.
- Tier 2: Tempered Steel, Cured Leather — found in mid-game zones.
- Tier 3: Pestilence Ore, Cerim Silk — endgame and boss rewards.
- Max level: +5 for standard gear, +3 for unique boss weapons.
Rune system
Runes are consumable modifiers that add effects to weapons and armor. Each piece of gear has one or two rune slots. Runes can be swapped freely, but the old rune is destroyed. Common rune types include damage bonuses, elemental damage, stamina cost reduction, and health regeneration.
The Items guide lists all materials and their drop locations. The Weapons guide shows which weapons benefit most from specific upgrade paths.
FAQ
- Can I dismantle upgraded gear and get materials back?
- Yes. Salvaging at a workbench returns a portion of the materials used, including rare materials for higher-tier items.
- Are runes reusable?
- No. Removing a rune destroys it. Plan your rune loadout carefully before applying expensive ones.
