Combat System — Stamina, Weight, and Timing

Extreme threat

Updated 2026-06-03

Combat in No Rest for the Wicked is the core pillar of the experience. Moon Studios built a system that rewards patience and punishes recklessness. Every action — swinging, dodging, blocking — consumes stamina. Let it hit zero and you are left helpless, unable to block or evade for several seconds.

Stamina economy

ActionStamina CostRecovery Time
Light attack15% of bar0.8s
Heavy attack30% of bar1.5s
Dodge roll20% of bar0.6s

Parry25% of bar (on success)Instant (if successful)

Weapon weight classes

Weapons fall into three weight categories. Light weapons (dual blades, swords) let you chain three to four attacks before exhausting stamina. Medium weapons (axes, polearms) give you two to three swings. Heavy weapons (hammers, greatshields) allow only one to two attacks but deal massive poise damage, often staggering enemies on contact.

The parry window is roughly 12 frames at 60 FPS. Practice parry timing against basic enemies in the opening area before facing bosses. A successful parry opens a guaranteed critical hit.

Advanced techniques

  • Weapon swapping mid-combo cancels recovery frames — equip two weapon types for extended combos.
  • Jump attacks deal bonus poise damage and can interrupt most enemy attack wind-ups.
  • Environmental hazards (oil spills, water pools) can be ignited with fire arrows or torch weapons.
  • Backstabs are only available when enemies are mid-swing — not when they are idle.

See the Best Builds guide for weapon-specific combat strategies and the Weapons guide for a full breakdown of every weapon type in the game.
